The simplest test anyone can do in a tile shop. Pour equal water on the back of two tiles — absorption tells you everything about quality, because it reveals whether the tile was baked at the right temperature for the right time.

A second ink test confirms the same story: on low-grade tile the ink sinks straight into the grooves; on true porcelain it barely touches the surface.
